How to connect to your Windows VPS via RDP on macOS
Step-by-step guide using the Windows App application (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop).
Before you start, you will need:
✅ A Mac with macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
✅ Your VPS IP address (sent by email after activation)
✅ The Windows username and password (sent by email)
✅ An internet connection
Download Windows App from the App Store
Microsoft has replaced the old "Microsoft Remote Desktop" application with the Windows App. It is the official and free application for RDP connections from macOS.
Open the App Store on your Mac and search for "Windows App". If you search for "Microsoft Remote Desktop", you will be redirected to Windows App, which is the same application with an updated name.
Click Get and then Install. You may need to authenticate with your Apple ID.
⬇ Open in the App StoreOpen the application and add a new connection
After installation, open the Windows App from Launchpad or the Applications folder.
On first launch, the app may request microphone and camera permissions. You can allow or deny them, as these permissions are not required for normal use.
At the top, click the + button and select "Add PC".
Configure your VPS details
On the configuration screen, fill in the fields according to the table below:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| PC Name | Your VPS IP address. Example: 192.168.1.100If the RDP port has been changed: 192.168.1.100:port |
| User Account | Click "Add User Account" to save your credentials. Username: AdministratorPassword: the password sent by email when the VPS was activated. |
| Friendly Name | A name of your choice to identify the VPS (for example: My Windows VPS). Optional. |
After filling in the details, click "Add" to save the connection.
Connect to your VPS
Back on the main Windows App screen, you will see the VPS icon you just added. Double-click the icon to start the connection.
Done! You will be connected to your Windows VPS desktop and can use it normally.
Useful optional settings
You can adjust preferences by right-clicking the VPS icon and selecting "Edit":
| Option | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| Display | Set the remote screen resolution or use "Fit session to window" to adjust it automatically. |
| Devices & Audio | Redirect audio, printers, microphone, and clipboard (copy/paste between your Mac and the VPS). |
| Folders | Share folders from your Mac with the VPS. They will appear as a network drive in the remote session. |
Troubleshooting
Check if the IP address is correct. If the RDP port has been customized, include it in the format IP:port. Make sure your network allows connections on the port being used (default: 3389).
The default username is Administrator (with a capital "A"). The password is the one sent in the activation email. If you forgot it, contact our support team to reset it.
This may happen if another RDP session is already active or if Windows is still starting up. Wait a few seconds or try disconnecting and reconnecting.
Check the keyboard language in Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region and adjust it as needed.
Microsoft has replaced it with the Windows App. Search for "Windows App", which is the official replacement with the same features.
